In Bansi Birju (1972), Jaya made her first acting debut alongside Amitabh Bachchan. The following year, she appeared in B. R. Ishara's Ek Nazar. She was the only one who consented to fill in when the majority of the lead actresses in the Salim-Javed-penned 1973 film Zanjeer refused to work with Amitabh due to his run of failures.
The movie became a huge hit, giving Amitabh Bachchan the reputation of an angry young man. All of their subsequent movies together, including Abhimaan (1973), Chupke Chupke (1975), Mili (1975), and Sholay (1975), were tremendous successes (1975).
